Health insurance coverage is mandatory for all international students and for spouses and children who are accompanying an international student to Canada. It is your responsibility to enrol your dependents and yourself for health insurance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You or your partner may have supplemental health insurance through one of your employers. This type of insurance is usually complementary to the RAMQ and does not cover basic care or emergencies. As such, it is not sufficient as primary insurance.<\/p>\n<h2>Universit\u00e9 Laval Health Insurance<\/h2>\n<p>At Universit\u00e9 Laval, all international students are automatically covered by the Universit\u00e9 Laval group health and hospitalization insurance plan through Desjardins Insurance. This health insurance covers only registered students. If you are not registered for a Fall or Winter semester, this insurance will be voided.<\/p>\n<p>More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulaval.ca\/en\/international\/immigration\/enrolling-in-the-health-and-hospitalization-insurance-plan-for-international-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.ulaval.ca\/en\/international\/immigration\/enrolling-in-the-health-and-hospitalization-insurance-plan-for-international-students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Private health insurance<\/h2>\n<p>You must purchase a private health and hospitalization insurance if:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Family members (spouse, children, etc.) come to live with you in Canada. Minor children (under 17 years old) of international students may be eligible for health insurance and prescription drug insurance coverage (Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s public plan\u2014RAMQ) provided they intend to be in Qu\u00e9bec for more than 6 months a year. Registration is done online, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramq.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/citizens\/health-insurance\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government of Quebec website<\/a>. Contact the RAMQ within 15 days of your child arriving in Qu\u00e9bec so coverage can start as soon as they arrive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You are not enrolled at Universit\u00e9 Laval for a Fall or Winter semester<\/strong> and are therefore not covered by Universit\u00e9 Laval health insurance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You remain in Canada after graduation.<\/strong> You must be insured from the moment your insurance coverage from the university ends to the moment the coverage from R\u00e9gie d\u2019assurance maladie du Qu\u00e9bec (RAMQ) for holders of a post-diploma work permit begins.<\/li>\n<li>You remain in Canada after an exchange. You must be insured from the moment your insurance coverage from the university or R\u00e9gie d\u2019assurance maladie du Qu\u00e9bec ends until your departure from Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Getting a health insurance quote<\/h2>\n<p>Visitors and temporary resident must purchase an insurance called \u201chealth insurance&#8221; or \u201ctravel insurance&#8221; for visitors to Canada. Many Canadian insurance companies offer this kind of insurance.<\/p>\n<p>It is suggested to request at least three quotes. You can compare their plans and choose the one that best fits your current situation. It is essential that you examine the policy booklet before making the final purchase. Here are a few factors to take into account before choosing a coverage:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>The maximum amount covered (between $25,000 and $1,000,000 per year)<\/li>\n<li>What is and what is not covered (dental bills, travels outside Canada, childbirth, contraception, pre-existing conditions, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>The deductible (the amount you have to pay before claiming expenses to your insurer)<\/li>\n<li>The age of the person to be covered (some companies will not insure people older than 59, 69, 90, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Some companies require that you contact them within a specific amount of days following your arrival in Canada or the end of your previous coverage.<\/p>\n<h2>Health insurance providers<\/h2>\n<p>For information on other insurers who provide Visitor&#8217;s Insurance, please see a list of websites below.
