{"id":98036,"date":"2015-07-30T10:03:11","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T14:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bve.ulaval.ca\/?page_id=98036"},"modified":"2024-06-11T10:03:30","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T14:03:30","slug":"telephone-internet-and-cable-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bve.ulaval.ca\/en\/international-students\/living-in-quebec-city\/telephone-internet-and-cable-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Telephone, Internet, and Television services"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"accordion-title\">\n<h2>Making\u00a0calls<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know to make calls in Qu\u00e9bec:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>If you use a landline, you can make unlimited free local calls (unlimited in number and talk time).<\/li>\n<li>A phone number is considered local if it has 10 digits (area codes 418-and 581, e.g., 418-656-2765).<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>long-distance call within North America<\/strong> has 11 digits and is not free (e.g., 1-418 or 1-514-XXX-XXXX).<\/li>\n<li>Calls to phone numbers with the area codes 1-900 and 1-976 are billed at a <a href=\"https:\/\/crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/phone\/telemarketing\/900.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher rate<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Calls to phone numbers with the area codes 1-800, 1-833, 1-844, 1-855, 1-866, 1-877, and 1-888 are toll-free.<\/li>\n<li>When calling off campus from a Universit\u00e9 Laval phone, you must always dial 9.<\/li>\n<li>For <strong>international calls<\/strong>, you must first dial 011, the country code, and then the regional or city code before the phone number.<\/li>\n<li>Three-digit numbers are used <strong>to access free services<\/strong>, for example the list of local community resources (211), directory information (411), Info-Sant\u00e9 health information (811), and <strong>emergency assistance (911)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Long-distance calling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Certain <strong>providers specialize in long-distance calling<\/strong> and offer competitive rates for service using your existing telephone line.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of a few such providers:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Caztel: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1010710.com\/intro_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.1010710.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Yak: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yak.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.yak.ca<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1010320: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1010320.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.1010320.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>450 Tel: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.450tel.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.450tel.ca<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On campus, you can also purchase long-distance calling cards at the Chez Alphonse convenience store in the Maurice-Pollack building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-title\">\n<h2>On-campus Internet access (WiFi)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Universit\u00e9 Laval offers free access to the Eduroam or Eduroam 2 wireless Internet network to all registered students. Internet access is available from anywhere oncampus and in most Universit\u00e9 Laval off-campus buildings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boite-bleue\">\n<p><strong>To connect to the WiFi:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose the <strong>Eduroam <\/strong>or <strong>Eduroam 2<\/strong>\u00a0network<\/li>\n<li>Enter <strong>IDUL@ulaval.ca<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Enter your password (<strong>PIN<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-title\">\n<h2>Cell phone service<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Before you purchase a cell phone or activate a phone brought from your home country, check with a number of companies to compare prices. It is important to note that cell phone plans can vary greatly between countries. Find out about the various packages and possibilities before making your choice. A combination of services (such as Internet and cell phone) can often be advantageous.<\/p>\n<p>Once you choose your service provider, you have two options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use <strong>prepaid cards<\/strong> to reload your account directly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sign up for a monthly plan that. <\/strong>Be sure to check the inclusions or exclusions of your phone plan and select the options that best suit your needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"boite-bleue\">\n<h6><strong>Important note:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>International calls are usually not included in monthly plans (even those that
