Businesses and business hours
You will find businesses of all sorts in the three large shopping centres located near campus (Place Ste-Foy, Place de la Cité and Laurier Québec). You will also enjoy discovering lovely boutiques on Maguire, Cartier, Saint-Jean, Grande-Allée, Saint-Vallier and Saint-Joseph streets.
Although in-store prices are fixed, prices vary among stores. We advise you to go to several stores and, if possible, talk to someone who has lived here for years to find out which prices are fair and to get familiar with stores in the area.
Most businesses are open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Stores in shopping centres generally open at 9:30 a.m. (10:00 Sunday). The following establishments have longer business hours: supermarkets, small neighbourhood grocery stores, accommodation stores, pharmacies, etc.
Computer hardware and school supplies
Here are places where you can buy computer hardware and school supplies:
Convenience store
The term convenience store is used in Quebec to designate a local store that is open late at night and allows you to buy basic groceries, alcohol, tobacco products, etc. Many convenience stores are combined with gas stations.
The main convenience store chains are:
- Couche-Tard
- Chez Alphonse (Pavillon Alphonse-Desjardins, Université Laval)
- Proxi
- Petro-Canada
Food
Services on the campus
Contrary to practices in other countries, prices in university cafeterias on Québec campuses are the same for everyone. Many students bring their lunch or meal and heat it up in one of the microwaves found in most building’s cafeterias.
To know all the places where to eat on campus, see Mon équilibre UL (only in french).
Are you in financial difficulty? Visit the Facebook page of La Table du Pain for free bread and food.
Grocery stores
The cost of groceries varies considerably from one store to another. A number of stores opt for a chic style but their prices are higher than those at plainer, low-cost stores. Some supermarkets issue discount coupons or have customer loyalty programs. Ask your merchant.
